 What's a pantomine?

If you happen to be from England, you will almost surely know what a pantomine (panto) is, but if you are from the rest of the world (or normally just the USA), you almost definately won't.

A panto is a play on stage. It requires no good acting what so ever. The humour is mostly slapstick jokes with a few humourous references to current affairs. The plotline is always based loosely on a nursery rhyme/fair tale (e.g. sing a song of sixpence, cinderella, snow white, hickery dickery dock).

The characters always include the following:
  • A man dressed as an ugly woman-the dame.
  • An evil villain who isn't very clever and the audience always boo and hiss at and is always in green light.
  • The evil villain's two stupid henchmen.
  • The king and queen who are normall oblivious to everything.
  • The hansome prince (played often by a woman) who is the hero.
  • The beautiful princess who nearly always needs rescuing.
  • A friendly, but stupid boy who talks to the audience (often with the dame).

The panto always has lots of singing with the audience of well known songs, sweets are often thrown to the children at some point, there is a scene when the good characters are scared away whilst singing one by one by a creature, a happily ever after wedding at the end.

Characters all wear over the top make up and costumes, and play their parts in a very over the top way. They often argue in a "Oh no it isn't...Oh, yes it is" way.

There are lots of characteristic things about a panto and overall, it sounds very childish, but you really have to see one to understand that anyone of any age can find them hilarious. The best equivalent you would understand is that "Enchanted" is very like a pantomime made into a film.

I looked on youtube for a good one, but the only reasonably well filmed one is this and it's not all that good, but you should get the idea. I tried to select the best bit.
